Award Nominations

Each year at the Save a Life Summit we honor outstanding individuals and agencies for the exemplary jobs they do to prevent traffic crashes, injuries, and deaths in their communities. This year's awards will spotlight individuals and organizations that have made outstanding efforts to reduce deaths and injuries caused by impaired driving on Texas roads. The deadline for award nominations is July 22, 2011.

Award Criteria

Eligibility Requirements: Any Texas peace officer or Texas law enforcement agency conducting DWI enforcement are eligible for the Officer/Deputy or Department of the Year awards. Participation in a TXDOT funded STEP is not a requirement. Nominations for the Officer/Deputy or Department of the Year awards can be STEP or non-STEP, or a combination of both.

Impaired Driving Enforcement Trooper of the Year

These nominations will be judged on the basis of overall officer performance, knowledge of the program, extracurricular performance, program participation, DWI-enforcement activities, and PI&E activities during the 2010 fiscal year (10/1/2009-9/30/2010).

All troopers with the Department of Public Safety are eligible for this award based on their work in the following areas:

  • Number of DWI arrests ≥ 50
  • Public Information and Education Activities ≥ 1
  • Successful completion of the NHTSA Standardized Field Sobriety Testing Course

Texas DPS Impaired Driving "Sergeant Area" of the Year

These nominations will judged based on overall area performance, timely and accurate reporting, program participation, and extracurricular performance during the 2010 fiscal year (10/1/2009-9/30/2010).

Sergeant Area Award Criteria:

  • Number of DWI arrests ≥ 50
  • Public Information and Education Activities ≥ 1
  • Successful completion of the NHTSA Standardized Field Sobriety Testing Course

Impaired Driving Enforcement Officer/Deputy of the Year

These nominations will be judged on the basis of overall officer performance, knowledge of the program, extracurricular performance, program participation, DWI-enforcement activities, and PI&E activities during the 2010 fiscal year (10/1/2009-9/30/2010).

One award may be presented in each agency category for Officer/Deputy of the Year. Size classifications are as follows:

A. 1-50 officers
B. 51-300 officers
C. 301 or more officers

The criteria for each size category are as follows:

A. 1-50 officers

  • Number of DWI arrests ≥ 20
  • Public Information and Education Activities ≥ 1
  • Successful completion of the NHTSA Standardized Field Sobriety Testing Course

B. 51- 300 officers

  • Number of DWI arrests ≥ 40
  • Public Information and Education Activities ≥ 1
  • Successful completion of the NHTSA Standardized Field Sobriety Testing Course

C. 301 or more officers

  • Number of DWI arrests ≥ 50
  • Public Information and Education Activities ≥ 1
  • Successful completion of the NHTSA Standardized Field Sobriety Testing Course

These nominations will judged based on overall departmental performance, timely and accurate reporting, program participation, and extracurricular performance during the 2010 fiscal year (10/1/2009-9/30/2010).

One award may be presented in each agency category for Department of the Year. The size classification is as follows:

A. 1-50 officers
B. 51-300 officers
C. 301 or more officers

The criteria for each size category are as follows:

A. 1-50 officers

  • Number of DWI arrests ≥ 50
  • Public Information and Education Activities ≥ 1

B. 51-300 officers

  • Number of DWI arrests ≥ 150
  • Public Information and Education Activities ≥ 1

C. 301 or more officers

  • Number of DWI arrests ≥ 300
  • Public Information and Education Activities ≥ 1

Jacqueline Saburido Award

The Jacqueline Saburido Award is presented to a non-law enforcement individual or organization that has made significant contributions to assist in preventing drunk driving deaths and injuries in Texas. Through this award, Texas continues to honor Jacqui's courage and dedication.

These nominations will be judged for efforts during the 2010 fiscal year (10/1/2009-9/30/2010):

  • Hours Worked ≥ 500 HRs
  • Presentations ≥ 10
  • Total Audiences ≥ 1000
